I had this issue innitially as well, unfortunantely my computer is not connected directly to my router or anything but my steam link is connected directly. I isolated my issue to the connection not being strong enough so the sound was just being dropped or something. Either way, with the steam link hooked in directly and my computer on wireless i capped my streaming at 15mb/s (as oppose to autodetect) and set the sound to stero (also not autodetect).
I also downed my resoulution of the picture to 720p (with little to no noticeable difference almost) and when i booted up my steam link and started streaming, SOUND! I hope this helps out somewhat. I think my problem was just that I was trying to do it wirelessly and with the autodetect options in the settings it just bounces all over the place.
(this just gave me basic sound on my TV, but its sound no less haha).
